19 Years and Still Reigning Champs

Just today, our farmer of 19 years began the harvest of 125 tons of these precious green peppers, in the city of Hatch, New Mexico, and we couldn't be more excited.  This really is our favorite time of year, and with August 6th just around the corner we are putting the finishing touches on new hatch inspired recipes, stocking pepper packed products into every aisle, and making room in our produce department for fresh and roasted-on-site Hatch peppers at every store.

Not only are we bringing in the best peppers, but we are also bringing you pepper experts. This year, Dave DeWitt, the "Pope of Peppers" and one of the foremost authorities in the world on chile peppers and spicy foods, will be visiting our stores to show you how to make classic dishes from New Mexico. In each class you'll discover the best techniques to use when roasting, peeling and storing chiles and then learn to cook with these amazing peppers. You can sign up for classes today.

Direct From Us to Ewe

Farmer Jacqueline Smith and Cheese Maker Sarah Hoffmann’s spreadable cheese is handmade with milk from their farm’s flock of about 230 dairy ewes that graze on 250 acres of nutritious grasses and legumes. It’s this special diet that gives the Green Dirt cheeses their unique flavors – Fresh Plain, Nettle, Rosemary, Garlic & Peppercorn, and Spicy Chilis.

When it comes to flavor, Green Dirt’s farmstead cheeses are a richer, creamier, less tangy alternative to goat cheese, and they’re great for cooking:

  • Add the delicate favor of Fresh Plain to pizza with figs. Or add a dollop on a plate drizzled with olive oil and cracked pepper, and serve with crusty bread. You can also mix it in a bowl of fresh melons and young mint leaves.
  • Mix Nettle with whole wheat pasta with heirloom tomatoes.
  • Sprinkle Rosemary in salads or on a good cracker.
  • Garlic & Peppercorn and Spicy Chili both pair perfectly with nuts and a good beer.

These fresh cheeses have been recognized for outstanding flavor and quality at the American Cheese Society's prestigious annual competitions. First taking home prizes in 2009 for Fresh Plain and Fresh Nettle, then again in 2012. In 2013, Fresh Plain won first place, while Fresh Rosemary took second and Fresh Garlic & Peppercorn received third place.

The New King of Pop

Recently written up by the Wall Street Journal, saying "One of the pleasures of traveling across the country is sampling each regions emblematic soda," which is why we are thrilled with being one of only two places in Texas you can find this Pacific Northwest gem.

Hand-picked summer fruits and berries, pure cane sugar, a dash of organic lemon juice, and filtered sparkling water are all that go into each batch. Pure, fresh-from-the-tree (or vine) tastes of cherries, apples, cranberries, and more burst with flavor that’s right at home at any picnic, ballgame, or just a lazy summer day.

Another way to make the most of the flavors, try ‘em over ice cream in fun floats!
