Chardon-Yay!

Like all great things that become a commercial and critical success, there will follow a tidal wave of producers cranking out poor imitations (sometimes bitter and watered down, and other times clumsy and cartoonishly sweet). If you too are part of the “ABC” movement (Anything But Chardonnay), we’d love the chance to understand why they have broken your heart in the past, and turn you on to some exciting choices that will make your heart pitter-patter.

At Central Market, we have a huge selection and wide range of styles of Chardonnay. We can show you anything from a steely, minerally, unoaked version from Chablis, France to an aged version from Spain with purposeful oxidative notes of a dry Sherry, to full, lush tropical takes from some warmer climate regions of the world. We’re also proud to say that we have about twenty Chardonnays that are either made specifically for us by talented winemakers or are exclusive to us in Texas. Look for our Central Market Selection signs to find these choices from five different countries. We hope that you’ll be inspired to pick up at least a few since all of these are priced within a very affordable range, from Marc Cellars (California) at $6.95/bottle to Domaine Fourrey Premier Cru Chablis (Burgundy) at only $24.95/bottle.

Knock-Out Wine Tastings at Dallas Lovers

I’m especially excited that we are kicking off the week on Wednesday, July 10th, with one of my favorites, Heavyweight Wines. Anthony Scotto III will host a demo in the Dallas Lovers Wine Department, offering tastings and answering questions about the family winery and their knockout seller, Heavyweight Cab. I not only purchase this wine for my home, but frequently recommend and gift it to friends. I even have one of their posters in my dining room – I promise, it’s just a cool label.

Heavyweight is a dark, rich, heavy-hitting California Cabernet that seems (to me) to pair perfectly with so many Texas food favorites. Steak, burgers, seafood, anything you can put on the grill and of course, BBQ. When I find a wine I like in my price range I tend to stick to it like glue, so I’ve even paired Heavyweight with guacamole, Tex-Mex, and various charcuterie and appetizers. It may sound a little heavy for summer drinking, but a true Cab lover has to tough it out sometimes. I just turn the A/C down a notch.

As you can tell by my “wheels-off” pairing advice, I am no sommelier. I’m a price shopper who loves good wine and buys in bulk. I’m also a Central Market Partner and lifelong Foodie, so I expect the most for my money. If you fit any or all of these descriptions, you’ll love the line of Heavyweight wines produced by the Scotto Family Winery. They’ve just introduced a new Merlot as well, if you’re into that. Go for a round with the champ and try them all on Wednesday, July 10 from 4-7 pm at Dallas Lovers.

Anthony will also be making the rounds at a few of our other stores, including:

  • Fort Worth, July 11th – 4:00-7:00pm
  • Houston, July 13th – 4:00-7:00pm
  • San Antonio, July 14th – 12:00-3:00pm
  • Austin Westgate, July 15th – 4:00-7:00pm
  • Austin North Lamar, July 16th – 4:00-7:00pm

Candycots Are Nature’s Candy!

Candycots are the culmination of putting the best seeds in the world together and making one intensely sweet tasting piece of fruit. When you first take a bite, be sure there is no one in the "splash zone" because they are just as over the top in juiciness as they are in sweetness. Candycots aren’t just sweet, they take sugar levels to an unheard of range from 25-30 on the Brix scale and easily double your average apricot sugar level!

When you scour the world looking for the best apricots that nature has to offer, one could only wonder what could come of then combining some of these seeds together, and that’s exactly what California farmer, John Driver, did. Put only the best of the best seeds together to bring to us what we now know as Candycots. Often times farmers will use plums or even peaches to cross breed and add sweetness, but Candycots are apricot in nature from beginning to end. Almost every Candycots sugar level is so high that while its left on the tree for maximum ripeness it develops a brownish patch or what can appear to be a scuffing of the fruit. Its often been joked that this result is natures natural sugar indicator for the Candycot. If that wasn’t enough for you to want to try natures candy, how about one more push? Candycots contain no fat and are an excellent source of vitamin A, C and E.

Culture Club

And the wait was worth it. With no bells or whistles, the emphasis is on taste.  The small, family-owned and operated artisan company in upstate New York has created a simple yogurt made with whole milk from 100% grass-fed cows raised on the Maple Hill farms, real fruit and … that’s about it. All you’ll find is real fruit and a layer of sweet cream on top that harkens back to the days before no-fat or low-fat milk existed.

Where you might find artificial sugars in other yogurts, Maple Hill’s yogurts come by their sugar naturally. The sugars come from real fruit, like wild blueberries, and real ingredients, like maple syrup. Look for the clean packaging in Dairy and grab a container of uncomplicated goodness.

Find your favorite and taste a bit of springtime. Available in five flavors: Plain, Vanilla, Lemon, Wild Blueberry and Maple. Great for a snack, as breakfast, alone, or with fruit or granola.

Foodie Finds: Discover the World, One Taste at A Time

What does it take to be a Central Market Foodie Find? Excellent question! Foodie Finds are:

Products we discovered all over the world and in our own backyard.  We’ve scouted items from Brooklyn to Belgium, Canada to Chile and all points in between. Our in-house Chefs even got into the Foodie Find spirit, creating their own unique recipes.

New foodie flavors you’ve never tasted. We found new foodie flavors even we have never tasted! Our palates thanked us, and yours will too.

Items exclusive to Central Market – some in very limited quantities. If you find something you can’t live without, and you will, don’t be shy. Scoop it up while you can!

But wait –there’s more! We’ve created a Foodie Finds bi-monthly newsletter that features the best of the best. You can find the newsletter on our website, throughout the stores, and also in the mail with your Weekly Savor. By the time you read through it, your next CM shopping trip will have planned itself. Just pop in and look for the special Foodie Find signs. (Oh yeah, did we mention that we have more than 400 Foodie Finds throughout our stores?)

As always, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Our in-store Foodies can help with recommendations, pairings, recipes, even preparation advice. Help is just a green-and-white-striped apron away.

Whether it’s your first time or your 5,000th time at our store, come in, let your Foodie flag fly and your epicuriosity run wild. Trust us. You’ll fall in love with something at first bite.
