It’s been called the fish for non-fish lovers, because, well, it’s un-fishy. (That means kids like it too.) Barramundi is also trendy because of its health benefits: it has nearly as much omega 3 content as the coho salmon and only half the calories. A 5-ounce serving has just 137 calories, 2.5 grams of fat and less than 100 mg of sodium, making it one of the healthiest food choices.
Central Market is one of only two retailers in Texas selling fresh barramundi flown directly from the pristine waters of central Vietnam. Our supplier, Australis, pioneered a land-based hatchery and modern grow-out sea-cage system in unspoiled, clean blue water. The barramundi cages are widely spaced and stocked at only 1% density, meaning the fish have plenty of room to swim freely, resulting in more muscular, unstressed animals. The fish are fed a sustainably formulated mostly vegetarian feed that is independently tested for purity. No hormones or additives are ever used in this fish, and the patented water filtration system continuously purifies and reuses 99% of this precious resource.
Australis’ greener way of farming has been recognized by major environmental organizations, including Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program, Environmental Defense, Blue Ocean Institute and many others. In 2009, Australis was named a Seafood Champion for sustainability by the Seafood Choices Alliance and in 2007 was awarded the Australian Company of the Year for the Environment.
Barramundi is a great alternative to fish like cod, salmon and tilapia and works beautifully with almost any fish recipe. Just bake it with some breadcrumbs, sauté it with a little olive oil and citrus, or throw it on the grill with an herb marinade and you’ve got a healthy, delicious meal in minutes. Bonus? It won’t leave a lingering odor in your kitchen and there are no annoying little pin bones to worry about.
